High up in the sky, there was a playful little cloud named Charlie. He loved to play tricks on his friends. 'Hee hee, I love surprising everyone!' Charlie giggled.

But sometimes, when Charlie was having fun, he'd suddenly make loud noises and bright flashes. 'What was that? Did I do that?' Charlie wondered.

One sunny day, Charlie felt the air becoming warm. 'Ooh, warm air! This is fun,' he thought. 'Yum! Warm air is my favorite!' Charlie said, gobbling up the warm air.

The more Charlie ate, the bigger and fluffier he grew. But then his belly started to rumble. 'Uh-oh, what's going on?' Charlie said, feeling uncomfortable.

Just then, Wendy the Wind whizzed by, giggling with some leaves. 'Hey, Charlie! You're looking really big today. What's up?' Wendy asked.

'I've been eating lots of warm air. But now my tummy feels funny. It's weird!' Charlie said.

Wendy laughed, 'Oh, Charlie, sounds like you've got something big coming! You've eaten so much warm air, now you're like a cloud about to...'

'Well, you know... let it out!' 'Let it out?' Charlie asked, confused.

But before Wendy could explain, *ZAP!* a giant lightning bolt shot out of Charlie, lighting up the whole sky. 'Whoa! Did I just do that?' Charlie exclaimed.

Wendy burst out laughing. 'Yup! That was you, all right. And wait for it... here comes the big BOOM!' Wendy said.

Just as Wendy predicted, Charlie let out the loudest thunder ever—*BOOM!* It echoed across the sky.
Page 13
'Did I really just... make that noise?! In front of everyone?' Charlie asked, embarrassed.
Page 14
Wendy laughed and said, 'That's right, Charlie! When you eat all that warm air, it builds up inside you until—*BOOM!*—you have to let it out!'
Page 15
'That's what lightning is—a big, bright cloud burp! And the thunder is the sound of you letting it go!'
Page 16
Charlie couldn't stop giggling. 'So when I eat too much warm air, I let out a lightning burp? That's so funny!' he said.
Page 17
'Exactly! But don't worry, it's normal. That's how thunderstorms happen. It's nature's way of helping you release energy!' Wendy replied.

From then on, Charlie loved making thunderstorms. When he felt warm air, he knew it was time. 'Here comes a big, silly lightning burp!' he would say, puffing up with energy.

Thunderstorms happen when warm air makes clouds. The clouds fill up with energy. Then they let it out as lightning and thunder. Lightning is a bright flash, and thunder is the loud boom we hear.
