Meet Gary the Giraffe. He feels too tall for his own good, but a day in the bright savanna will show him that tall can be terrific!

Page 2

Gary was the tallest animal in the golden grass. His nose tickled treetops, and little birds sat on his short horns like a living perch. Everyone could spot him from far away.

But Gary did not enjoy bumping his head. Each step brought a loud bonk from low branches. He rubbed his sore spots and wondered why he had to grow so very high.

Road signs were no safer. Clonk! went the metal whenever Gary forgot to duck. He grinned shyly and whispered, 'Sorry, sign,' then kept walking with droopy ears.

One sunny morning he sighed, 'I wish I were small, like a rabbit or even an ant. Then nothing would whack my head.' He tip-toed along, watching every branch.

Tiny cries floated on the breeze. 'Help! Help!' they squeaked. The sound came from the tallest acacia tree, the one with the sweetest, crunchy green leaves.

At the trunk Gary found three hungry friends: Tia the tortoise, Max the monkey, and Lulu the lion cub. Their bellies rumbled while the tasty leaves waved far above.

Max hopped, Lulu stretched, and Tia stood on tiptoe shell, but no paw or hoof reached the snack. Gary's heart felt warm and tingly. Maybe his height could help!

He smiled. 'Being tall might be useful after all!' Gary straightened his long legs, lifted his neck, and gently nibbled a branch full of fresh leaves.

Whoosh! The leaves fluttered down like green snow. 'For us?' gasped Lulu. 'Sure!' laughed Gary. The babies munched happily, crunch-crunch-crunch.

'You are amazing, Gary!' Tia cheered. Max swung his tail and said, 'Snack time is the best time!' Gary felt proud that his tall body made his friends full and glad.

'You are our tall hero,' purred Lulu. Gary's spots glowed with joy. For the first time he felt perfect, not clumsy, just wonderfully helpful.

Word spread fast. A baby zebra, a shy warthog, and even a flightless bird waddled over. Each time Gary reached high and shared leaves, smiles grew wider.

At sunset Gary tapped the same old sign. Bonk! He laughed, 'I still hit stuff, but every bump is part of my adventure.' The clouds blushed orange above him.

He gazed at the rainbow sky and whispered, 'Being tall lets me help others, and that makes being tall truly wonderful.'

With a happy heart Gary stretched toward the first evening star. He was finally content to be exactly who he was—tall, kind, and very loved.
